U.S. military enlistment aptitude testing centers on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The AFQT is a percentile derived from four ASVAB subtests. PiCAT is an unproctored, recruiter-authorized CAT-ASVAB pathway that requires later verification before its scores become the ASVAB score of record.
This hub routes those separate intents without treating them as interchangeable tests.
For UK Armed Forces assessments such as the Defence Aptitude Assessment (DAA), Army Cognitive Test (ACT) or Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB), use the UK Assessment Tests hub. U.S. ASVAB scores do not convert into UK assessment scores.

ASVAB, AFQT and PiCAT are different concepts
ASVAB
The ASVAB is the full military aptitude battery. It measures verbal, math, science/technical and spatial aptitudes and supports both enlistment screening and occupational classification.
AFQT
AFQT is not a second entrance exam. It is computed from:
- Arithmetic Reasoning;
- Mathematics Knowledge;
- Word Knowledge;
- Paragraph Comprehension.
The result is reported as a percentile from 1–99 and supports basic enlistment eligibility screening.
PiCAT
PiCAT is the unproctored version of CAT-ASVAB. Current OfficialASVAB guidance requires recruiter authorization and later proctored verification. Use the PiCAT owner for its current 30-day access-code window, 48-hour completion window and Vtest rules.
Dedicated subtest practice
- ASVAB Arithmetic Reasoning
- ASVAB Word Knowledge
- ASVAB Paragraph Comprehension
- ASVAB Mechanical Comprehension
These pages own skill-specific practice. The full ASVAB page should not duplicate every subtest question bank.
AFQT is not the same as job qualification
A qualifying AFQT can support basic enlistment eligibility. The Services also use their own ASVAB classification composites to help determine occupational qualification.
A score alone does not guarantee:
- enlistment;
- a specific MOS, rating or AFSC;
- a security clearance;
- medical qualification;
- a waiver;
- an available training seat.
The relevant Service recruiting authority and recruiter control current requirements.
Current administration families
CAT-ASVAB
The supervised computer test is adaptive. Current OfficialASVAB materials publish separate scored-question counts and subtest time limits and state that submitted CAT items cannot be revisited.
Paper ASVAB
Paper-and-pencil enlistment testing remains available at a limited number of MET sites. It uses fixed question counts and different subtest timing. Candidates can review within the current subtest while time remains.
PiCAT
PiCAT has no individual subtest time limits and does not include tryout items. It is not a substitute for the verification requirement.
Retest policy
Current OfficialASVAB retest policy requires:
- one month after the initial test before the first retest;
- another one month before the second retest;
- six months between additional retests after that.
Do not use an old third-party retest table when current OfficialASVAB guidance is available.
Official-source rule
Use OfficialASVAB for:
- ASVAB subtests and timing;
- AFQT scoring;
- CAT versus paper rules;
- PiCAT and Vtest process;
- general retest policy.
Use the current Service recruiting site and recruiter for:
- enlistment minimums;
- education-path rules;
- Service-specific composites;
- occupational qualification;
- waivers and current programs.

FAQ
Is AFQT a separate test?
No. It is a score derived from four ASVAB subtests.
Can anyone take PiCAT online?
No. Recruiter authorization is required, and verification is required before the PiCAT result becomes the ASVAB score of record.
Is there one minimum AFQT for every military Service?
No. OfficialASVAB states that minimum requirements vary by Service and directs applicants to Service-specific recruiting sources.
Should I study only the four AFQT sections?
Not necessarily. Those four determine AFQT, but other ASVAB subtests can matter for occupational classification. Match your preparation to the Service and jobs you are considering.

Why trust Job Practice Tests
Independent from employers and test publishers
Job Practice Tests is an educational site. We are not the employer, regulator, or official test publisher, and we say so clearly when a guide discusses a third-party assessment.
Official sources come first
Hiring rules and test formats change. When an employer or agency publishes current instructions, those instructions take priority over any preparation guide, including ours.
