PiCAT is the Pending Internet Computerized Adaptive Test, the unproctored version of CAT-ASVAB used in the enlistment testing program. It is not a public online ASVAB that anyone can start without recruiter authorization.

This page owns PiCAT access and verification. For the full ASVAB battery, use the ASVAB Practice Test. For AFQT scoring, use the AFQT Practice Test.

The practice questions below are original JobPracticeTests exercises. They are not PiCAT or ASVAB items and cannot predict whether a Vtest will confirm your result.

Current PiCAT facts from OfficialASVAB

OfficialASVAB currently states:

  • a military recruiter must issue the access code;
  • the access code expires 30 days after it is issued;
  • once you start PiCAT, it must be completed within 48 hours;
  • PiCAT typically takes about 2 to 3 hours;
  • there are no time limits for the individual PiCAT subtests;
  • PiCAT can be taken only once and is available only to applicants who have never taken the ASVAB;
  • no tryout items are administered on PiCAT;
  • an unverified PiCAT result is not yet the ASVAB score of record.

Follow your recruiter instructions if they differ because of scheduling or eligibility circumstances.

Verification Test (Vtest)

If PiCAT performance suggests eligibility for military service, the applicant is required to take a proctored Verification Test at a MEPS or MET site.

Current OfficialASVAB guidance says:

  • Vtest must be taken within 45 days of PiCAT;
  • it generally takes about 25 to 30 minutes;
  • candidates are not given a separate Vtest score;
  • its purpose is to check consistency between unproctored and proctored performance;
  • after successful verification, PiCAT scores become the official ASVAB scores of record.

Do not turn rumored match percentages or remembered Vtest questions into a study target. OfficialASVAB does not present the Vtest as a public question bank.

Do not use supervised CAT timing as PiCAT timing.

Testing integrity

OfficialASVAB tells PiCAT applicants to take the test without assistance. Do not:

  • ask another person for answers;
  • search the internet during the test;
  • post questions online;
  • use a calculator;
  • use AI or other unauthorized tools.

Official guidance permits scratch paper and a pencil/pen. Follow the current instructions shown in your assigned session.

1. Arithmetic Reasoning

A shipment travels 210 miles in 3.5 hours. What is the average speed?

Answer: C. 210 ÷ 3.5 = 60.

2. Mathematics Knowledge

Solve 4x + 8 = 32.

A. 4
B. 6

Answer: B. Subtract 8 to get 24, then divide by 4.

3. Word Knowledge

Valid most nearly means:

A. acceptable
B. accidental
C. hidden
D. temporary

Answer: A. In common usage, valid means acceptable, legitimate or sound in the relevant context.

4. Paragraph Comprehension

Passage: “The technician finished the inspection before recording the result. A second review was required only when a defect was found.”

When was a second review required?

A. after every inspection
B. only when a defect was found
C. before the first inspection
D. whenever the result was recorded

Answer: B. The passage states this directly.

5. Mechanical Comprehension

Two directly meshed gears rotate in:

A. the same direction
B. opposite directions
C. no fixed relationship
D. a straight line

Answer: B. Direct gear contact reverses direction.

6. Electronics Information

In a basic circuit, an open switch generally:

A. completes the circuit
B. breaks the current path
C. creates a battery
D. removes all resistance

Answer: B. An open switch interrupts the path.

How to prepare for PiCAT

  1. Confirm that you were actually assigned PiCAT.
  2. Review the same broad ASVAB content domains you would prepare for on the full battery.
  3. Practise honestly without outside assistance.
  4. Use a stable internet connection and a quiet environment.
  5. Plan enough uninterrupted time even though individual subtests are not timed.
  6. Treat the later Vtest as verification, not as a second independent score to game.

What happens after PiCAT?

Your recruiter can view the PiCAT scores. If the result suggests potential eligibility, verification is the next key step. After successful verification, those scores become the official ASVAB scores of record and can be used for AFQT and classification purposes.

If verification does not confirm the result, follow the official testing instructions provided to you. Do not assume the unverified PiCAT remains controlling.
