The TSO assessment is the early computer-based assessment stage for applicants to Transportation Security Officer positions. TSA’s current public TSO hiring page says qualified applicants may be invited to take a computer-based test to evaluate image interpretation aptitude.

Candidates may see or search terms such as TSA CBT, TSA TAB, TSO Assessment Battery, or simply TSO assessment. Those labels should not be used to invent one universal current module list. Your Job Opportunity Announcement and invitation control the assessment you actually receive.

The exercises on this page are original general aptitude practice. They are not official TSA, DHS, OPM, USAJOBS, or assessment-vendor items and do not reproduce operational screening procedures or a confidential test form.

Later screenings Medical evaluation, federal drug screening, background check
Final pre-offer stage Ready Pool after required steps are complete

Universal public passing percentage Not published on the current public candidate pages reviewed for this update

Specialist TSA preparation options

For a TSA-only preparation path, explore TSA Career, a specialist site in our own network focused on TSA hiring and assessment preparation.

If you want a larger third-party timed question bank, review JobTestPrep’s TSA assessment practice. JobTestPrep is an independent commercial preparation provider and is not affiliated with TSA or DHS.

Use either resource only after checking the assessment named in your invitation. No preparation product can guarantee a passing result, Ready Pool placement, or job offer.

TSO role vs assessment name

TSO means Transportation Security Officer, the frontline TSA role. It is a job title, not the name of a single commercial test product.

TSA currently describes the hiring assessment in functional terms rather than publishing a universal candidate module list:

  • applicants first apply through USAJOBS;
  • qualified applicants may be invited to computer-based testing;
  • the public TSO page says the test evaluates image interpretation aptitude;
  • candidates selected to continue can receive a tentative job offer;
  • later stages include the Airport Assessment, medical/drug screening, background check, and Ready Pool.

Current TSO hiring sequence

TSA’s current public process has eight steps:

  1. Find a Job Opportunity Announcement.
  2. Create a USAJOBS profile and apply.
  3. Schedule and complete computer-based testing.
  4. Receive a tentative job offer if selected to continue.
  5. Complete the Airport Assessment.
  6. Complete a medical evaluation and federal drug screening.
  7. Complete a background check.
  8. Enter the Ready Pool.

The assessment is therefore one hiring gate, not the whole selection process.

TSA CBT, TAB, and TSO Assessment Battery terminology

TSA CBT

“TSA CBT” remains a common candidate term for the computer-based assessment. Use the TSA CBT guide for that search intent.

TSA TAB / TSO Assessment Battery

“TAB” and “TSO Assessment Battery” appear widely in preparation-market and candidate terminology. TSA’s current public TSO page reviewed for this update does not publish a universal TAB blueprint. Use the TSA TAB guide for a careful explanation.

Writing Skills Assessment

TSA currently hosts an official Writing Skills Assessment preparation manual in its Resource Documents directory. That makes the writing assessment a real TSA resource, but it does not prove that every current TSO applicant receives that module. Use the TSA Writing Skills guide when your invitation or hiring path makes it relevant.

What should you practise first?

If your invitation does not publish a module list, start with the skill TSA currently names publicly: image interpretation aptitude.

Useful non-operational practice includes:

  • exact visual comparison;
  • detecting small differences;
  • orientation and rotation;
  • short visual memory;
  • following conditional instructions;
  • maintaining accuracy under time pressure;
  • reading task rules before responding.

Do not assume that a commercial provider’s simulation exactly reproduces the screen, number of questions, timing, or scoring method you will receive.

Scheduling and test-day preparation

TSA’s published application tip sheet describes a proctored computer-based assessment and states that candidates receive an email invitation with a scheduling link. The published guide gives a 21-calendar-day completion window.

Your own invitation is the authority if it gives different instructions.

Before the appointment:

  • confirm the date, time, and location;
  • check identification requirements;
  • read accommodation instructions if needed;
  • arrive early enough for check-in;
  • do not rely on an old forum post for the deadline or delivery method.

What happens after the assessment?

Tentative Job Offer

Candidates selected to continue may receive a tentative job offer. This is not a final appointment.

Airport Assessment

TSA currently describes the Airport Assessment as a panel structured interview to determine whether the candidate has competencies required for the TSO position.

Use the TSA Airport Assessment guide for structured-interview preparation.

Medical evaluation and drug screening

TSA’s current TSO page lists a medical evaluation and federal drug screening after the Airport Assessment. The medical stage can include a physical exam, color-vision test, distance-vision test, and hearing exam.

Background check

TSA currently lists an electronic SF-86/e-86, fingerprinting, and credit/criminal-history checks as part of the background stage.

Ready Pool

After all required steps are complete, candidates may enter the Ready Pool and become eligible for a final offer based on airport hiring needs.

How to use practice effectively

Do not only record a percentage. Label each miss by cause:

  • visual-comparison error;
  • rotation/orientation error;
  • memory lapse;
  • instruction error;
  • rushed response;
  • attention lapse.

Then practise that skill category again with new questions.

Free vs paid preparation

Free practice is useful for learning the basic skill families and building an error log. Paid practice becomes more useful when you need larger banks, stricter timers, or a structured study sequence.

FAQ

What does TSA currently say the TSO computer-based test measures?

TSA currently says qualified applicants may be invited to a computer-based test that evaluates image interpretation aptitude.

Is TSO Assessment Battery the guaranteed official name?

No. TAB / TSO Assessment Battery terminology is widely used by candidates and preparation providers, but TSA’s current public TSO page does not publish one universal TAB blueprint. Follow your invitation.

Is there always an English section?

Do not assume so. TSA hosts an official Writing Skills Assessment preparation manual, but the current public TSO page does not say that every candidate receives that module.

Does passing the assessment guarantee a job?

No. Later stages include the Airport Assessment, medical evaluation, federal drug screening, background check, and Ready Pool.

Are the practice questions on this page official TSA questions?

No. They are original general aptitude exercises.
