Federal hiring does not use one universal civil service exam. The assessment path depends on the exact vacancy, agency, occupational series, grade, hiring authority and candidate instructions.
The safest starting point is always the live job announcement and any assessment invitation you receive after applying. This hub helps you route from that official name to the matching guide on JobPracticeTests.com.
The guides on this site are independent educational materials. They do not reproduce confidential federal questions, scoring keys or live assessment interfaces. Official agency, OPM, USAJOBS and U.S. Courts instructions control your application.
Start with the assessment named in your announcement
Use this sequence:
- Read the full USAJOBS or agency job announcement.
- Note the agency, occupational series, grade and any named assessment.
- Check the “How to Apply” and “How You Will Be Evaluated” sections for questionnaires, online assessments, interviews or other evaluation steps.
- If you receive a later invitation, use the assessment name and deadline in that message rather than a generic “federal exam” label.
- Use official candidate guides or practice materials first when the agency provides them.
- Use independent practice only for the specific skill or assessment path that actually applies to you.
USAJOBS confirms that some announcements include an application or job questionnaire and that the announcement explains the application steps and what happens next. That does not mean every federal vacancy uses the same questionnaire or test.
What USA Hire is in 2026
USA Hire is OPM’s federal assessment platform. OPM describes it as a skills-based system that agencies can use after an applicant submits through USA Staffing. Agencies may combine USA Hire with other assessments.
OPM’s current core package includes Standard Assessments for non-supervisory positions, the Early Career Talent Assessment and the Federal Supervisor Assessment. OPM also offers writing, data, leadership, program/project-management and custom assessments.
In July 2026, OPM completed the PATCO expansion so Standard Assessments are available across all General Schedule occupational series. Availability still does not create one mandatory exam for every applicant: the live vacancy determines whether and how an assessment is used.
If your invitation names USA Hire, start with:
- USA Hire Assessment
- USA Hire Occupational Reasoning
- USA Hire Occupational Judgment
- USA Hire Occupational Reading
- USA Hire Occupational Math
- USA Hire Occupational Interaction
- Early Career Talent Assessment
- Federal Supervisor Assessment
Agency and applicant-test guides
Transportation and homeland security
Use the role-specific guide when the agency names its own assessment:
- FAA ATSA
- TSA hiring process
- TSO Assessment
- TSA CBT terminology and transition
- TSA Airport Assessment
- TSA medical evaluation
- TSA background check
- TSA color vision test
- CBP Officer Entrance Exam
- Border Patrol Entrance Exam
- Federal Air Marshal assessment
- DHS assessment overview
- CISA assessment pathways
CBP Officer and Border Patrol Agent are different occupations with different entrance exams. Do not prepare for one as a substitute for the other.
Federal law enforcement, security and corrections
Federal law-enforcement hiring is role-specific. Start with the routing hub or named role instead of assuming there is one federal law-enforcement exam:
- Federal Law Enforcement Hiring Tests hub
- Federal Police Officer / Series 0083
- Federal Security Guard / Series 0085
- Federal Correctional Officer / Series 0007
- ATF Special Agent Exam
- ICE HSI Special Agent assessment
- Secret Service SAEE
- Secret Service UDEE
- U.S. Marshals assessment
- U.S. Capitol Police exam
- U.S. Postal Inspector exam
- FBI Intelligence Analyst test
- CIA assessment guide
- NSA assessment guide
For FBI Special Agent Phase I / Phase II requirements, use the dedicated FBI hiring guides and follow the current official candidate instructions.
Clerical, office-support and legal-assistance guides
Federal office-support titles do not map to one universal clerical exam. Use the occupational series to choose the correct owner:
- Federal Clerical Tests & Office Support hub
- Federal Clerk-Typist / Series 0322
- Federal Data Entry / Data Transcriber Series 0356
- Federal Legal Assistant / Series 0986
The former generic Federal Administrative Assistant and Federal Office Assistant routes are consolidated into the clerical hub because those titles can map to different federal occupational series depending on the duties.
Professional and occupational guides
Some federal candidates search by occupation rather than a named agency exam. These guides retain that intent while making clear that the live announcement controls the actual evaluation method:
- Federal Accounting Exam guide
- Federal Engineering Exam guide
- Federal Park Ranger Exam guide
- Federal Firefighter Exam guide
- Federal Probation Officer Exam guide
For probation and pretrial services, U.S. Courts guidance controls rather than an OPM/USA Hire assumption. Current openings are announced individually by federal court districts.
Federal overview guides
Use these when you need broader orientation rather than a named agency assessment:
Federal versus state and local civil service
This hub covers U.S. federal hiring pathways. It does not own state, county or municipal civil-service exam intent.
If your announcement comes from a state, county, city or local civil-service commission, use the Civil Service Exams hub instead.
Postal Service employment is also a separate pathway from the core federal hiring routes on this page; use the relevant USPS guide when your vacancy is with the Postal Service.

FAQ
Is there one federal civil service exam for every agency job?
No. Federal assessment methods vary by agency, occupation, grade, announcement and hiring path.
Does every federal applicant take USA Hire?
No. USA Hire is widely available and used across federal hiring, but a vacancy may use another assessment, an occupational questionnaire, an agency-specific exam, an interview, a technical evaluation or a combination of methods.
Does USA Hire availability mean my series automatically uses a test?
No. OPM’s availability tables show which standardized assessment packages agencies can use. Your live announcement and candidate invitation determine whether one is assigned to you.
Where should state or city applicants go?
Use the Civil Service Exams hub for state, county and municipal pathways.
Are the practice questions on this site official?
No. They are independent educational practice. Always use official agency or OPM instructions as the source of truth for the actual hiring process.

Why trust Job Practice Tests
Independent from employers and test publishers
Job Practice Tests is an educational site. We are not the employer, regulator, or official test publisher, and we say so clearly when a guide discusses a third-party assessment.
Official sources come first
Hiring rules and test formats change. When an employer or agency publishes current instructions, those instructions take priority over any preparation guide, including ours.
