Paragraph Comprehension (PC) is an ASVAB verbal subtest. OfficialASVAB describes it as measuring the ability to obtain information from written passages.
PC contributes to the AFQT together with Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge and Word Knowledge. This page owns PC-specific preparation. For the full battery, use the ASVAB Practice Test.
The passages and questions below are original JobPracticeTests material, not official ASVAB items.
Current official timing
| Administration | PC questions | Time limit |
|---|---|---|
| CAT-ASVAB, without tryout questions | 10 scored | 27 minutes |
| CAT-ASVAB, when possible tryout questions are included | 10 scored + up to 15 tryout | up to 75 minutes |
| Paper-and-pencil ASVAB | 15 | 13 minutes |
The formats have very different pacing. Do not use paper timing as a CAT-ASVAB target.
What Paragraph Comprehension tests
Typical reading tasks include:
- locating a stated detail;
- identifying a main idea;
- drawing an inference supported by the text;
- understanding cause and effect;
- following sequence;
- interpreting a word from context.
The safest general rule is: answer from the passage, not from outside assumptions.
A reliable reading method
- Read the question and identify what it asks.
- Read the passage for the relevant evidence.
- Separate what is stated from what is merely plausible.
- Eliminate answers that add information not supported by the passage.
- Recheck absolute words such as always, never, only and must.

PC versus Word Knowledge
PC measures understanding of passages. Word Knowledge focuses on word meaning and synonyms. Both contribute to AFQT, but they are different subtests.
Use ASVAB Word Knowledge for vocabulary-specific practice.
Common mistakes
Avoid:
- answering from personal experience instead of the passage;
- choosing a statement that could be true but is not supported;
- overlooking negative wording such as not or except;
- reading every passage as if it contains hidden technical knowledge;
- using a practice percentage as an official AFQT score.
CAT-ASVAB navigation
CAT-ASVAB is adaptive and does not allow returning to a question after it is submitted. Paper administration permits review within the current subtest while time remains, but not a return to an earlier subtest after the administrator moves on.
Follow the live instructions for your actual administration.
