The CAST Test is an Edison Electric Institute (EEI) employment-test battery used in many electric-utility selection processes for construction and skilled-trade roles. Its official name is the Construction and Skilled Trades Selection System. EEI associates CAST with three broad job areas: transmission and distribution, facilities and equipment, and meter-reader service and repair.
EEI develops and supplies employment tests to participating energy companies. EEI does not administer CAST directly to individual applicants. The hiring utility controls scheduling, delivery method, cutoff standards, retesting, result communication, score-transfer decisions, and accommodations. Traditional third-party descriptions commonly identify Graphic Arithmetic, Mathematical Usage, Mechanical Concepts, and Reading Comprehension. Some resources also describe a revised CAST-R variant. The exact title and sections in your invitation control. JobTestPrep sells third-party CAST preparation. JobTestPrep is not EEI, a utility, an employer, or the official administrator.
The 45 questions on this page are original study exercises. They are not official EEI, CAST, CAST-R, utility-company, employer, testing-center, or JobTestPrep questions and do not reproduce a proprietary test form, scoring system, diagram, conversion table, or passage.

What Is the EEI CAST Test?
CAST stands for Construction and Skilled Trades Selection System. It is an EEI employment-selection battery for construction and skilled-trade occupations in the electric utility industry. It is an aptitude-style selection tool used in hiring processes, not a trade-license exam, energized-work qualification, or lineworker certification program.
Who Uses CAST?
Current EEI Employment Test Batteries documentation associates CAST with construction and skilled-trade jobs across:
- transmission and distribution;
- facilities and equipment;
- meter-reader service and repair.
Not every lineworker, electrician, meter technician, or skilled-trade applicant takes CAST. Employer use varies.
Utility examples:
- Entergy’s public pre-employment testing page lists Construction and Skilled Trades Selection System (CAST) among its EEI batteries.
- CenterPoint Energy’s pre-employment assessments page lists Construction and Skilled Trade Selection (CAST) among EEI assessments it partners on, with employer-provided EEI practice materials.
Always confirm the assigned battery name in your invitation.
Does EEI Administer the Test?
No. Current EEI Industry Training and Testing guidance states that EEI supplies tests to participating member companies and does not administer tests directly to applicants. Applicants deal with the hiring electric company. EEI does not provide results directly to applicants. Candidates who previously completed an EEI test should notify the new hiring company.

What Sections Are on CAST?
Traditional CAST descriptions identify four aptitude sections:
- Graphic Arithmetic
- Mathematical Usage
- Mechanical Concepts
- Reading Comprehension
Do not assume every current administration contains all four traditional sections until your invitation confirms them. CAST-R may differ.
Graphic Arithmetic
This area may ask you to read a drawing, use dimensions, find a missing length, compute perimeter or area, and ignore irrelevant markings when they are not needed.
Mathematical Usage
Transferable skills include whole-number arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, basic algebra, unit conversion, area, perimeter, volume, and substituting into a supplied formula. Use only formulas or conversions provided in the live materials.
Mechanical Concepts
Useful general themes include force, motion, levers, pulleys, gears, belts, friction, gravity, pressure, heat, and simple circuit continuity. This is aptitude reasoning, not linework or equipment-repair instruction.
Reading Comprehension
Useful skills include locating stated facts, main idea, vocabulary in context, sequence, cause and effect, and distinguishing supported conclusions from unsupported assumptions.
How Many Questions Are on CAST?
JobTestPrep and similar resources currently describe a traditional CAST battery with 110 questions. Current EEI public overview pages emphasize job-family purpose and administration rules rather than publishing that item count as a fixed consumer-facing specification. Treat 110 as a common third-party description unless your invitation or employer brochure states otherwise.
Do not confuse JobTestPrep’s 98-question full-length practice simulation with an official live-test total. That 98-question resource is a third-party product design.
How Long Is CAST?
JobTestPrep commonly describes about 90 minutes of testing time. Instruction, check-in, breaks, and employer logistics can change appointment length. Do not treat unofficial practice timers on this page as official CAST clocks.
Is CAST Paper-Based or Computer-Based?
EEI currently states that most of its employment tests can have multiple delivery options, including paper, computer, and testing center. Computer delivery does not necessarily mean remote or unproctored testing. Your hiring utility’s invitation controls the actual method.
Can You Use a Calculator?
Calculator policy is utility-specific. JobTestPrep states calculators are not permitted, but that statement is not treated here as a verified universal EEI public rule. Follow the invitation and proctor instructions. Do not use unauthorized devices.
Can You Use Scratch Paper?
Scratch-paper rules are utility-specific or session-specific. Do not assume. Follow the invitation and proctor instructions.
Are Wrong Answers Penalized?
Follow the live instructions for your assigned form. Do not rely on a universal guessing strategy based only on third-party claims.
How Is CAST Scored?
EEI public materials emphasize that hiring companies handle applicant results. JobTestPrep describes an EEI index scale from 1 to 10 and employer thresholds such as 4, 5, or 6. Those cutoff examples are not published here as universal official EEI rules for every utility and role. Employers can set their own standards. Candidates may or may not receive a numeric index score.
What Score Do You Need?
There is no universal public candidate cutoff that should be assumed for every utility and vacancy. Practice scores do not predict employer decisions, interviews, apprenticeships, or offers.
Can CAST Scores Be Transferred?
Prior EEI testing may sometimes be considered by another company, but transfer is not automatic. Notify the new hiring utility and follow its authorization process. Entergy, for example, currently directs candidates who previously passed the required test elsewhere to complete an EEI Authorization to Release form and return it to Entergy’s candidate-testing contact. The receiving company decides whether a retest is required.
What Is the CAST Retest Policy?
Waiting periods and attempt limits are utility-specific. Do not publish 30 days or two attempts per year as universal CAST rules.
Entergy example only: Entergy currently states that a minimum of 30 days must pass between the first and second attempt on the same EEI test, and that applicants may not take the same test more than twice in a twelve-month period. Other utilities may differ.
What Is CAST-R?
Third-party preparation resources, including JobTestPrep, describe CAST-R as a revised CAST variant. Public EEI overview pages emphasize CAST job-family purpose and do not provide a detailed consumer-facing CAST-R specification in the same overview materials checked for this guide. When your invitation names CAST-R, follow that invitation for sections, timing, and scoring. Do not assume CAST and CAST-R are identical.
Does CAST-R Include a Behavioral Inventory?
JobTestPrep states that CAST-R replaces Mathematical Usage with a behavioral inventory while keeping other core aptitude areas. That structure is presented here as a third-party description, not as a verified universal EEI public specification. Do not invent scored behavioral-inventory practice. If your form includes behavioral items, follow the live instructions exactly.
CAST vs MASS
| Feature | CAST | MASS |
|---|---|---|
| Official focus | Construction and skilled trades | Power-plant maintenance positions |
| Broad EEI contexts | Transmission/distribution; facilities/equipment; meter-related service | Fossil, nuclear, and hydroelectric plant maintenance |
| Interchangeable? | No | No |
For MASS preparation, see the EEI MASS Test guide. For the wider EEI family, you may also review JobTestPrep’s overview of EEI employment tests.
CAST vs POSS
POSS targets plant-operator roles. CAST targets construction and skilled-trade roles. They are not interchangeable. For POSS preparation, see the EEI POSS Test guide.
CAST vs TECH
TECH targets technician occupations that commonly require an associate degree. CAST is a construction and skilled-trades selection battery. For TECH preparation, see the EEI TECH Test guide.
CAST vs IBEW Aptitude Test
IBEW / NECA apprenticeship testing is a separate union apprenticeship pathway. Do not merge IBEW algebra and reading specifications into CAST preparation. See the IBEW Aptitude Test guide when that is the assigned process.

It is an EEI employment-selection battery associated with construction and skilled-trade roles in transmission and distribution, facilities and equipment, and meter-reader service and repair contexts.
Does EEI administer CAST directly?
No. The hiring utility administers or arranges the candidate process.
What jobs use CAST?
EEI documentation associates CAST with construction and skilled-trade job areas listed above. Employer use still varies by vacancy.
What sections are on CAST?
Traditional descriptions list Graphic Arithmetic, Mathematical Usage, Mechanical Concepts, and Reading Comprehension. Confirm the sections named on your invitation. CAST-R may differ.
How many questions are on CAST?
110 questions is a common third-party description. Current EEI public overview pages do not present that figure as the primary consumer-facing specification. Your invitation controls.
Why does JobTestPrep’s simulation have 98 questions?
That count is a third-party practice-product design. Do not treat it as the official live-test total.
How long is CAST?
About 90 minutes is commonly described by JobTestPrep. Follow your employer schedule for check-in and section timing.
Is CAST online?
EEI states that most EEI tests can have multiple delivery options. Your invitation controls whether CAST is paper-based, computer-based, testing-center based, or another arranged format.
Is CAST paper-based?
Not universally. Delivery is utility-specific.
Can you use a calculator?
The hiring utility’s current instructions control.
Can you use scratch paper?
The utility or proctor instructions control.
Are wrong answers penalized?
Follow the live instructions. Do not assume a universal policy without confirmation for your session.
How is CAST scored?
Hiring utilities control result use. Index-scale descriptions such as 1 to 10 appear in third-party materials and should not be treated as a verified universal public EEI candidate rule without employer confirmation.
What score do you need?
There is no universal public cutoff that should be assumed.
Can a CAST score be transferred?
It may be considered in some hiring processes, but transfer is not automatic.
How long must you wait before retesting?
The hiring utility controls the waiting period and annual-attempt limit. Entergy currently publishes a 30-day minimum between first and second attempts and a maximum of two attempts in twelve months for the same EEI test.
What is CAST-R?
Third-party resources describe a revised CAST variant. Follow the exact invitation if CAST-R is named. Do not assume it matches traditional CAST section-for-section.
Does CAST-R include a behavioral inventory?
JobTestPrep describes a behavioral inventory replacing Mathematical Usage. Treat that as third-party wording unless your invitation confirms it.
Is CAST the same as MASS?
No.
Is CAST the same as POSS?
No.
Is CAST the same as TECH?
No.
Is CAST the same as the IBEW aptitude test?
No.
Are these official CAST questions?
No.
Is JobTestPrep official?
No.
Does preparation guarantee a job?
No.
