Civil service reading questions measure whether you can understand written material accurately and apply it without adding assumptions that are not supported by the text.
The exact section name varies by examination. Your notice may use terms such as Reading Comprehension, Understanding Written Material, Applying Written Information or another title. The current official announcement controls the format, question count and timing.
A reliable reading method
- Identify what the question asks: detail, main idea, inference, sequence or rule application.
- Return to the relevant sentence or paragraph.
- Eliminate answers that add information not in the passage.
- Choose the narrowest answer fully supported by the text.

Common reading traps
Wrong answers often:

- make an absolute claim from limited evidence;
- reverse a condition;
- confuse what could happen with what the text says will happen;
- answer from personal experience instead of the passage.
How to improve
After each practice set, label every error:
- missed detail;
- unsupported inference;
- misunderstood word;
- sequence error;
- rule-application error;
- pacing error.
Then practice the error category, not just another random passage.
