Gallup CliftonStrengths is the current name for Gallup’s online talent assessment formerly widely known as StrengthsFinder. Candidates and organizations still use the older StrengthsFinder label in invitations, books and workplace conversation. The live assessment presents paired statements. Gallup currently describes completion as approximately 30 minutes. Results describe natural patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving, organized into 34 CliftonStrengths themes and four domains.
Organizations commonly use CliftonStrengths for development, coaching, education, management and team building. Some organizations may discuss it in employment contexts, but Gallup’s Help Center currently states that CliftonStrengths is a development tool, not a selection tool, and is not recommended for comparing candidates or making hiring decisions. The assessment does not use conventional factual right and wrong answers.
JobTestPrep publishes a third-party CliftonStrengths and StrengthsFinder guide and related personality preparation. JobTestPrep is not Gallup, not the assessment administrator and not an employer sponsor. Ethical preparation means understanding terminology, format, reports and process, not manufacturing a desired Top 5 or full-34 profile.
The educational questions on this page test your understanding of CliftonStrengths terminology, format, themes, domains, reports, ethical preparation and candidate process. They are not official Gallup, CliftonStrengths, StrengthsFinder, employer or JobTestPrep items and do not reproduce a proprietary assessment, scoring key, theme algorithm, norm table or report.
CliftonStrengths, StrengthsFinder and Gallup are trademarks of Gallup, Inc. This page is an independent educational guide and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Gallup.
What Is Gallup CliftonStrengths?
CliftonStrengths is Gallup’s current talent assessment brand. StrengthsFinder is the former widely recognized product name. Gallup remains the provider. The assessment is designed to identify natural talent patterns and support strengths development. Themes describe recurring patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. They are not certified skill badges, fixed competencies or clinical diagnoses.
For candidates, the practical distinction matters. A cognitive aptitude test scores problem-solving accuracy under time pressure. A conventional personality questionnaire used in selection may be scored against job criteria. CliftonStrengths focuses on talent themes for development and self-awareness. Treat any employer’s use carefully and follow the organization’s instructions without assuming a universal pass-or-fail hiring cutoff from Gallup.

How Does CliftonStrengths Work?
Gallup describes CliftonStrengths as an online assessment. You see paired statements and select which statement best describes you. The continuum typically includes positions such as strongly describing one statement, a milder preference, a neutral midpoint and the corresponding choices for the other statement. Exact on-screen wording is proprietary and can vary by interface or language. Do not memorize third-party paraphrases as official items.
Progress is generally saved so an interrupted session can often be resumed through the authorized account. Follow the live Gallup interface when the sponsoring organization or Gallup Support gives different instructions.
Optional format-only illustration
The illustration below is format-only. It is not an official Gallup item, is not scored, does not map to any CliftonStrengths theme and is not one of the 45 educational questions.
Statement A: I prefer finishing one task before starting another.
Statement B: I prefer keeping several unfinished tasks in motion.
Live CliftonStrengths wording, timing controls and scoring logic are proprietary. Use only the authorized Gallup session when completing the real assessment.
How Many Questions Are on CliftonStrengths?
Gallup’s 2023 technical report, The CliftonStrengths Technical Report: Development and Validation of the Assessment Known as CliftonStrengths and StrengthsFinder (Jim Asplund and Jim Harter), states that CliftonStrengths presents 200 items that each consist of a pair of potential self-descriptors. Gallup Help Center materials align with that current 200-item description. The same report explains earlier development lengths of 180 and then 177 items before later revisions. JobTestPrep’s public Gallup guide currently still describes 177 questions. Prefer current Gallup materials for candidate planning, and follow the live interface if your invitation differs.
This page’s educational questions are not Gallup items and do not simulate a 200-item or 177-item session.
How Long Does CliftonStrengths Take?
Gallup’s current How CliftonStrengths Works page describes the assessment as taking approximately 30 minutes. Some third-party guides, including JobTestPrep, cite a 30-to-45-minute range. Plan uninterrupted time near the 30-minute estimate and leave a small buffer for sign-in, instructions and any technical checks.
Is CliftonStrengths Timed?
Distinguish four clocks:
- Total approximate completion time of about 30 minutes.
- Per-item response window. Gallup Help Center currently describes about 20 seconds per item and notes that the timer encourages instinctive responses.
- Any organization invitation deadline.
- Access-code or purchase validity rules for unlocking reports.
If you need a timer accommodation, use Gallup Support or the sponsoring organization process rather than third-party workarounds.
What Does CliftonStrengths Measure?
CliftonStrengths measures natural patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. Results place those patterns into 34 themes. Themes are talent descriptors, not certificates of skill mastery. Context, practice, values and opportunity still shape how talent shows up at work.
The Four CliftonStrengths Domains
Gallup groups the 34 themes into four domains. No domain is universally superior.
Strategic Thinking
Themes related to absorbing, analyzing and using information to support decisions and future possibilities.
Relationship Building
Themes related to forming relationships, supporting others and strengthening groups.
Influencing
Themes related to speaking up, taking charge, reaching broader audiences and moving others toward action.
Executing
Themes related to making things happen, completing tasks and turning ideas into results.
The 34 CliftonStrengths Themes
Every person has all 34 themes in a unique order. Reports highlight different portions of that sequence. Theme names below use Gallup’s current official labels and domain placement. Descriptions are short original summaries only. Do not treat any theme as rare-means-better or common-means-weaker. This page does not publish unverified global frequency rankings.

Does Everyone Have All 34 Themes?
Yes, in Gallup’s current framing each person has all 34 themes arranged in a personal order. Top 5 and CliftonStrengths 34 reports differ in how much of that order they reveal and explain, not in whether the remaining themes exist.
What Is a Top 5 Report?
CliftonStrengths Top 5 is Gallup’s widely used report that focuses on your five most dominant themes. It is an official Gallup product unlocked by the corresponding purchase or access code. It is not a pass-or-fail score.
What Is a CliftonStrengths 34 Report?
CliftonStrengths 34 provides the full sequence of all 34 themes with broader report content than Top 5 alone. Users who started with Top 5 may later purchase an upgrade that unlocks the full 34 using existing results. An upgrade code that only unlocks additional report content is not the same as a retake code.
Role-Specific Reports
Gallup also offers role-oriented report products such as CliftonStrengths for Students, Managers, Leaders and Sales. These products present Gallup’s theme insights for those contexts. Unless Gallup states otherwise for a specific product, treat them as report and resource packages built on the same CliftonStrengths assessment family, not as unrelated new talent tests. Exact packaging can change in the Gallup store.
Is CliftonStrengths a Personality Test?
CliftonStrengths is commonly discussed alongside personality and talent assessments. Gallup describes it as a talent assessment focused on natural patterns rather than a clinical personality inventory or a conventional aptitude test. For broader hiring-personality formats, see the Personality Assessment guide.
Does CliftonStrengths Have Correct Answers?
No conventional factual answer key exists. The useful task is honest recognition of recurring patterns, not hunting for supposed ideal theme answers.
Can You Pass or Fail CliftonStrengths?
Gallup does not publish a universal passing score for CliftonStrengths. Results are theme rankings and reports, not pass-or-fail exam marks.
Can Employers Use CliftonStrengths for Hiring?
Gallup’s Help Center currently states that CliftonStrengths should not be used as a selection tool for hiring. Gallup describes it as a development tool and says it has not been validated for selection purposes or for linking specific themes to success in particular positions. Organizations may still mention strengths language in coaching or culture programs. This page does not publish an employer-usage list because third-party lists were not independently verified against current first-party employer sources.
If an invitation mentions CliftonStrengths or StrengthsFinder, follow the organization’s instructions and Gallup Access prompts. Do not invent a required employer Top 5.
Will You Receive Your Results?
Result access depends on purchase type, access-code type and whether an organization administers your Gallup Access experience. Personal store purchases generally unlock the corresponding report in your account. Organization-managed codes may restrict what you can view or share. JobTestPrep feedback is not an official Gallup report.
Can You Retake CliftonStrengths?
Gallup Support explains that retaking requires a new unused access code or invitation. You redeem the new code in your existing Gallup Access account and select the retake option. Previous and new results can remain available, and you can choose which set is active. Gallup also notes that talents tend to remain relatively stable and that most people do not need a retake. Do not invent free unlimited retakes or a mandatory waiting period beyond what your account path shows.
CliftonStrengths versus StrengthsFinder 2.0
StrengthsFinder is the former brand name. StrengthsFinder 2.0 remains associated with Gallup’s book and historical product naming. Candidates may still receive old terminology in documents. Prefer CliftonStrengths as the current assessment name while recognizing that older labels can refer to the same assessment family. Historical product packaging is not automatically identical in every detail to the current experience.
CliftonStrengths versus Generic Personality Tests
Generic personality tests often use Likert ratings or forced-choice blocks to produce scale scores for hiring or development. CliftonStrengths uses paired statements to produce a ranked theme sequence and domain grouping. Formats, constructs and reports are not interchangeable.
CliftonStrengths versus SHL OPQ32
SHL OPQ32 is an occupational personality questionnaire with its own characteristics and reporting. It is not CliftonStrengths. See the SHL OPQ32 Test guide.
CliftonStrengths versus Talogy PAPI
Talogy PAPI measures work-related personality and preferred working style with a different scale structure. See the Talogy PAPI Test guide.
CliftonStrengths versus Hogan, Caliper and Predictive Index
Hogan inventories, Caliper and Predictive Index tools use different models and report languages. Theme names such as Achiever or Learner are not drop-in replacements for HPI, Caliper or PI scales. See Hogan Assessment, Caliper Assessment and Predictive Index Assessment when those products are named.
CliftonStrengths versus TTI Success Insights
TTI DISC concerns behavioral style and 12 Driving Forces concerns motivation. CliftonStrengths themes are a different Gallup framework. Do not convert themes into DISC graphs or Driving Forces. See the TTI Success Insights guide when a TTI assessment is named.
CliftonStrengths versus Gallup Q12
Gallup Q12 measures employee engagement through workplace survey items. It is not CliftonStrengths and does not produce a 34-theme talent sequence.
How to Prepare Ethically for CliftonStrengths
- Confirm the exact assessment name.
- Verify whether the invitation says CliftonStrengths or StrengthsFinder.
- Use the authorized Gallup account or access code.
- Check the completion deadline.
- Review device and browser requirements.
- Plan approximately 30 uninterrupted minutes.
- Learn the paired-statement response format.
- Read both statements before responding.
- Think about genuine recurring patterns.
- Distinguish typical behavior from aspirations.
- Avoid trying to force a particular theme.
- Avoid researching an employer’s supposed ideal Top 5.
- Do not memorize third-party responses.
- Do not use AI or another person during the live assessment.
- Contact Gallup or the sponsoring organization for technical problems.
- Request accommodations through the authorized process.
- Follow all live instructions.
Free versus Paid Preparation
Free preparation can help you:
- identify the exact assessment name;
- learn current CliftonStrengths and StrengthsFinder terminology;
- understand paired statements and domains;
- review report options such as Top 5 and CliftonStrengths 34;
- prepare a quiet environment;
- rehearse ethical response principles.
Paid third-party preparation may help only for verified features such as general personality familiarity, paired-statement practice style, format explanations, study guides, repeated practice and clearly unofficial feedback.
Current product finding for JobTestPrep: the dedicated Gallup StrengthsFinder / CliftonStrengths page is primarily an editorial guide. Its commercial preparation path links to JobTestPrep’s generic personality practice package rather than a separately itemized CliftonStrengths-only course configuration on that page. The generic package currently advertises access tiers such as one-week, one-month and three-month options at publicly shown prices around USD 79, USD 89 and USD 99, with one-time license language rather than automatic renewal on the visible sellbox, plus a personality study guide, a full personality practice test and 30 single-trait practice tests. Those materials are general personality resources. They are not confirmed as Gallup-official or as a theme-for-theme clone of Gallup’s 34 themes.
JobTestPrep is a third-party preparation provider. It is not Gallup, the hiring organization or the official assessment administrator. Its practice questions, role feedback, trait exercises and reports are not official CliftonStrengths items, theme scores, Top 5 results, full-34 rankings or employer benchmarks.
Do not expect preparation to guarantee a particular theme, Top 5, favorable report, interview, promotion, job offer or employment outcome.
Common Mistakes
- Treating StrengthsFinder and CliftonStrengths as unrelated products.
- Using the former name as though it were the only current official brand.
- Treating CliftonStrengths as a cognitive aptitude test.
- Assuming 177 items without checking current Gallup Help Center or technical materials.
- Confusing a 30-minute average with an unlimited assessment.
- Assuming the 20-second rule without reading current Gallup guidance.
- Searching for correct personality answers.
- Attempting to create an employer’s ideal Top 5.
- Assuming certain themes guarantee success.
- Treating rare themes as better or common themes as weaker without verified Gallup frequency publications.
- Confusing themes with learned skills.
- Assuming one domain is universally strongest.
- Assuming every employer uses CliftonStrengths for selection.
- Relying on an unverified employer list.
- Treating JobTestPrep feedback as an official Gallup report.
- Confusing Top 5 with a complete 34-theme report.
- Expecting every role-specific report to use a different underlying assessment.
- Confusing CliftonStrengths with Gallup Q12.
- Using AI during the live assessment.
- Using recalled or leaked items.
- Treating an educational score as a talent profile.
