An Ironworker Apprenticeship Test may be used by a local joint apprenticeship committee, union-management program, contractor association, employer, or training sponsor. There is no single aptitude-test format used by every ironworker program.

Requirements vary according to local union, joint apprenticeship committee, contractor association, employer, training center, state, province, country, recruitment cycle, test provider, and structural or reinforcing program emphasis.

What Does an Ironworker Do?

BLS and O*NET provide broad occupational context. Potential high-level points include installing structural or reinforcing iron and steel; reading and following plans or instructions; aligning and connecting components; measuring and checking work; working with structural frameworks or reinforcing materials; completing physically demanding work; following formal safety procedures; and receiving apprenticeship or on-the-job training.

Structural Ironworker vs Reinforcing Ironworker

Structural ironworkers generally install structural steel components. Reinforcing ironworkers work with reinforcing bars or mesh. Apprenticeship sponsors may train candidates in one or both areas.
