The Universal Cognitive Aptitude Test (UCAT) is a pre-employment cognitive aptitude assessment published by Criteria. It is not the medical University Clinical Aptitude Test, and it is not UCAT UK, UCAT ANZ, or the former UKCAT.

According to Criteria’s current public materials, Criteria UCAT contains 40 items in 20 minutes. Criteria describes it as language-independent and states that verbal ability is not tested. Public materials associate it with critical thinking, problem solving, attention to detail, and logic and analysis (score reports also break out numerical and spatial reasoning). Scoring is discussed as a raw score out of 40 and a percentile ranking. Employers control benchmarks and how results are used.

JobTestPrep provides independent third-party preparation for Criteria UCAT. JobTestPrep is not Criteria, not the hiring employer, and not an official UCAT administrator.

The 45 practice questions on this page are entirely original. They are not official Criteria, UCAT, employer, or JobTestPrep questions and do not reproduce a proprietary item, diagram, answer key, norm table, report, interface, scoring rule, or live assessment form.

What Is the Universal Cognitive Aptitude Test?

The Universal Cognitive Aptitude Test is Criteria’s timed pre-employment cognitive aptitude assessment. Criteria positions it for mid- to higher-level roles and for international or multilingual hiring contexts where a verbal-heavy battery is less suitable. It is a cognitive aptitude test, not a personality inventory, medical admissions test, or language exam.

What Does UCAT Stand For?

In this employment-assessment context, UCAT stands for Universal Cognitive Aptitude Test.

Is This the Medical UCAT?

No. Criteria UCAT is a hiring assessment. The University Clinical Aptitude Test used in medical and dental admissions pathways is a separate product with a different provider, format, purpose, and scoring system. This page does not prepare candidates for medical-school admissions testing.

What Does the UCAT Measure?

Criteria describes cognitive aptitude related to problem solving, digesting and applying information, learning, and critical thinking. The Score Report Guide groups reported skill areas as Logic and Analysis, Numerical Reasoning, Attention to Detail, and Spatial Reasoning.

How Many Questions Are on the UCAT?

Criteria’s public materials describe 40 items. The Information Brief notes that most candidates will not complete every question within the time limit.

How Long Is the Criteria UCAT?

Criteria describes a 20-minute total time limit.

How Much Time Is Available per Question?

20 minutes divided by 40 items is about 30 seconds per item on average. Criteria does not publicly state that each live question has an individual 30-second timer. Do not rely on third-party claims that candidates have about one minute per question.

Does UCAT Include Verbal Reasoning?

No. Criteria states that verbal ability is not tested. Do not spend preparation time on vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, or reading-comprehension batteries for this assessment.

Is UCAT Language Independent?

Criteria describes UCAT as language-independent because it does not test verbal ability and is positioned as more easily translatable for international use. That does not mean instructions are wordless, that the test is culture-free or bias-free, that every employer offers every language, or that norms are identical across every language form.

What Types of Questions Are on UCAT?

Based on Criteria’s public samples and score-report categories, expect nonverbal work across numerical reasoning, logic and analysis, spatial or figural patterns, and attention-to-detail comparisons. Official samples reviewed for this guide used five answer options. Live administration details can still vary, so follow the invitation. The practice set below uses five options (A-E) for educational consistency with those public samples.

UCAT Numerical Reasoning

Expect arithmetic, percentages, ratios, fractions, rates, short word problems, and practical data comparison. Keep calculations manageable under time pressure.

UCAT Logic and Analysis

Expect conditional rules, ordering, classification, short deduction, and constraint-style conclusions with limited verbal load.

UCAT Spatial and Figural Reasoning

Expect sequences, matrices, rotations, reflections, movement, fill changes, overlaps, and odd-one-out style visual rules.

UCAT Attention to Detail

Expect paired comparisons, symbol matching, string checking, and gap spotting under time pressure.

Can You Use a Calculator?

Criteria does not publish one universal public calculator rule for every UCAT administration on the materials reviewed for this guide. Follow the invitation and live instructions.

Can You Skip Questions?

Exact skip controls are not published as one universal public UCAT UI rule. Follow the live interface.

Can You Return to Previous Questions?

Not confirmed as one universal public rule. Follow the live interface.

Are Wrong Answers Penalized?

Treat penalty rules as instruction-dependent. Criteria’s general candidate guidance often reminds people to read whether wrong answers are penalized. Follow the live assessment instructions.

Is UCAT Proctored?

Monitoring settings vary by employer and delivery configuration. Unsupervised remote delivery is described as available in Criteria’s Information Brief. Confirm identification and monitoring requirements in your invitation.

What Languages Is UCAT Available In?

Criteria’s public product page currently lists English (US) as default, plus Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English (UK), French (Canadian), German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Macedonian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Romanian, Russian, Spanish (Latin American), Swedish, and Ukrainian.

The employer or assessment administrator controls the assigned language. Do not assume every employer offers every language.

How Is UCAT Scored?

Criteria reports a raw score (number correct out of 40) and a percentile ranking. The Score Report Guide also describes separate percentiles for Logic and Analysis, Numerical Reasoning, Attention to Detail, and Spatial Reasoning. Employers may associate suggested score ranges with roles or create organisation-specific ranges. This guide does not republish proprietary range tables.

What Does a UCAT Percentile Mean?

A percentile compares performance with a norm group. A percentile of 65 means scoring above 65% of the relevant norm group. Percentile is not the same as percentage correct.

What Is a Good UCAT Score?

It depends on the employer, role, and benchmark. Criteria does not publish one universal public “good” score for every job. Do not treat third-party occupation bands (including any band that exceeds the maximum raw score of 40) as official Criteria cutoffs.

Is There a UCAT Passing Score?

There is no verified universal public passing score that applies to every employer.

Will You Receive Your UCAT Results?

Results typically go to the hiring organisation. Candidate score release is employer-controlled. Check Criteria Candidate FAQs and your invitation for release wording.

Can You Retake the Criteria UCAT?

The employer controls retest policy. Assessments completed for one company are not automatically reused for another company under Criteria FAQ framing.

Criteria UCAT versus CCAT

Both are Criteria cognitive aptitude tests, but they are separate assessments:

Feature Criteria UCAT Criteria CCAT
Items / time 40 / 20 minutes 50 / 15 minutes (current public CCAT materials)
Verbal ability Not tested (Criteria wording) Includes verbal reasoning
Positioning Language-independent / international use Common public listing often includes English US/UK

Scores are not directly convertible. Criteria reports a high correlation (r = .80) in a sample of people who took both tests; correlation does not make content, timing, or cutoffs identical. A CCAT Practice Test package is not automatically UCAT preparation. See also Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test.

Criteria UCAT versus PI Cognitive

Different providers, timings, and report systems. No direct score conversion. See Predictive Index Assessment when relevant.

Criteria UCAT versus Wonderlic

Different publishers, specifications, and norms. No direct score conversion. See Wonderlic Practice Test when that battery is named in your process.

Criteria UCAT versus Medical UCAT

Feature Criteria UCAT University Clinical Aptitude Test
Purpose Pre-employment Medical/dental admissions contexts
Provider Criteria Separate admissions testing pathway
Format 40 items / 20 minutes (Criteria public materials) Different admissions format and scoring
Score relationship None None

JobTestPrep Universal Cognitive Aptitude Test Preparation

JobTestPrep is an independent third-party preparation provider. It is not Criteria, the hiring employer, or the official UCAT assessment administrator. Its simulations, questions, guides, videos, explanations, score reports, timing settings, and suggested approaches are not official Criteria items, reports, percentiles, norms, or employer decisions.

The current public JobTestPrep product page at /universal-cognitive-aptitude-test (HTTP 200; active PrepPack sellbox) marketed, at verification for this update:

  • access selectors labeled 1 Week, 1 Month, and 3 Months;
  • One-Time Payment messaging (not described here as an auto-renewing subscription solely from marketing labels);
  • Money Back Guarantee wording on the sellbox;
  • 5 full-length Criteria UCAT simulation tests;
  • 19 mathematics practice tests;
  • 24 figural-reasoning practice tests;
  • 5 formal-logic practice entries on the US product packaging reviewed;
  • step-by-step explanations messaging.

The same sellbox currently lists both “6 Guides and video tutorials” and “8 Guides & video tutorials.” Those conflicting interface strings were not reconciled to one confirmed guide/video total through a priced checkout confirmation available for this article, so this page does not publish either guide count as verified package contents.

Checkout line-item prices for the three durations were not confirmed as stable published amounts in the verification capture used for this guide (dynamic sellbox presentation). Prices are therefore not published here. Confirm current pricing, tax presentation, attempt limits, saved-progress behaviour, and score-report details inside the live product and checkout before purchasing.

Do not treat JobTestPrep practice as official Criteria forms, an exact replica of Criteria’s proprietary interface, a source of live or authentic Criteria questions, or a guarantee of any raw score, percentile, interview, or job.

Educational Practice Scoring

  • 41-45 correct: Strong practice baseline
  • 35-40 correct: Good preparation level
  • 27-34 correct: Moderate readiness
  • 18-26 correct: Needs focused review
  • 0-17 correct: Review the core skills

These ranges apply only to the original educational questions on this page. They are not an official Criteria UCAT raw score, percentile, employer benchmark, passing result, interview prediction, or employment recommendation.

Unofficial Timing Practice

Complete all questions untimed first. Then optionally:

  • 12 numerical questions in 7 minutes;
  • 11 logic questions in 6 minutes;
  • 12 spatial questions in 8 minutes;
  • 10 attention-to-detail questions in 5 minutes;
  • all 45 questions in 26 minutes;
  • 20 selected questions in 10 minutes as an advanced drill.

Every timing above is unofficial. The live assessment contains 40 items in 20 minutes (about 30 seconds per item on average overall). The live test does not necessarily impose an individual timer on each question. Official instructions control.

Common Mistakes

  • confusing Criteria UCAT with medical UCAT;
  • assuming UCAT is another name for CCAT;
  • practising verbal vocabulary that is not tested;
  • believing candidates have one minute per question;
  • assuming every item has an individual timer;
  • assuming all questions are easy because the total time is longer than CCAT;
  • using a calculator without permission;
  • spending too long on one problem;
  • ignoring attention-to-detail practice;
  • confusing rotation with exact identity;
  • overlooking a second matrix rule;
  • treating percentile as percentage correct;
  • relying on unsupported occupation score ranges;
  • assuming one universal passing score;
  • treating JobTestPrep as official;
  • copying official or recalled questions;
  • using AI during the live test;
  • treating an article score as a hiring prediction.

FAQ

What does UCAT stand for?

Universal Cognitive Aptitude Test.

Who publishes the Universal Cognitive Aptitude Test?

Criteria.

Is this the medical UCAT?

No.

How many questions are on the Criteria UCAT?

40 items.

How long is the Criteria UCAT?

20 minutes.

How much time is available per question?

The overall average is approximately 30 seconds per item, but this does not necessarily mean each question has an individual timer.

Does UCAT include verbal questions?

No. Criteria states that verbal ability is not tested.

What does UCAT measure?

Critical thinking, problem solving, attention to detail, logic, and analysis (with numerical and spatial reasoning on score reports).

Is UCAT language independent?

Criteria describes it as language-independent because it does not test verbal ability and is positioned for translation. That does not mean it is instruction-free or culture-free.

Can candidates use a calculator?

Criteria does not publicly confirm one universal calculator rule on the materials reviewed for this guide. The invitation controls.

Can candidates skip questions?

Not confirmed as one universal public UI rule. Check the live instructions before starting.

Can candidates return to earlier questions?

Not confirmed as one universal public UI rule. Check the live instructions.

Are wrong answers penalized?

Not confirmed as one universal public penalty rule. Read the live instructions.

Is UCAT proctored?

Employer and configuration vary. Unsupervised remote delivery is described as available in Criteria materials.

How is UCAT scored?

Raw score out of 40 and percentile ranking.

What does a UCAT percentile mean?

A percentile compares performance with a norm group. A 65th percentile means scoring above 65% of that group, not necessarily answering 65% of items correctly.

What is a good UCAT score?

It depends on the employer, role, and benchmark.

What is the UCAT passing score?

There is no verified universal public passing score.

Will candidates receive their result?

Employer-controlled release. Results typically go to the company.

Can candidates retake UCAT?

Follow current employer and Criteria guidance for your event.

Is UCAT the same as CCAT?

No.

Is JobTestPrep official?

No.

Does JobTestPrep provide real UCAT questions?

No.

Are the questions on this page official?

No.

Does preparation guarantee a job?

No.
