Employers may use a Microsoft Word assessment test, also called a Word skills test or Word test for interview, to evaluate document-production skills for administrative, clerical, legal-support, HR, office, customer-service, and documentation roles. This page sits under the Skills Assessment Tests hub. There is no single universal Word employment test.
A Microsoft Word assessment usually means a skills test involving Microsoft Word. It does not necessarily mean Microsoft Corporation hiring, MOS certification, a typing test, or a full Microsoft Office multi-application battery. Confirm your Word version, operating system, provider, difficulty level, and delivery format in your invitation.
The questions on this page are original practice-style exercises. They are not official Microsoft, Certiport, GMetrix, Kenexa, employer, recruiting-platform, or assessment-provider questions, and they do not reproduce a live hiring assessment. Always follow the instructions supplied by your employer or test provider.
Key Takeaways
- Word employment tests are separate from Microsoft hiring and from MOS Word certification (currently MO-110 for Word Associate on Microsoft 365 Apps).
- Word proficiency is distinct from typing speed and from broad Office batteries.
- Microsoft 365 Apps, perpetual Word versions, Word for the web, and macOS can differ. Advanced features such as mail merge, content controls, macros, or Copilot are not guaranteed on every test.
- There is no universal Word passing score, duration, or task count.
What Is a Microsoft Word Assessment Test?
A Microsoft Word assessment test measures knowledge or practical use of Microsoft Word. Employers often associate Word testing with document-heavy roles, but exact content depends on the job. Some tests ask conceptual multiple-choice questions. Others require actions inside a document or a simulated interface. Third-party preparation products are not official employer specifications.
Is There One Official Word Assessment Test?
No.
Assessments vary by employer, role, industry, test provider, Word version, Microsoft 365 versus a perpetual Office version, Windows versus macOS, desktop versus browser, simulation versus live Word, difficulty, time limit, and required tasks.
Before you prepare, verify:
- assessment title;
- provider;
- Word version;
- operating system;
- application or simulation interface;
- practical or multiple-choice format;
- duration;
- task count;
- permitted resources;
- required score;
- retest policy;
- accessibility process.
This page does not invent universal values for those items.
Microsoft Word Assessment vs Microsoft Hiring Test
The product name refers to proficiency with the Word application. It is not necessarily a recruitment assessment used to obtain employment at Microsoft Corporation. Keep Microsoft-employer hiring intent separate from Word skills preparation.
Word Assessment vs MOS Word Certification
An employer Word test evaluates workplace proficiency for a role. Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Word certification is a separate credentialing pathway.
As of the official Microsoft Learn page for Microsoft Office Specialist: Word Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps), exam MO-110 is the current Word Associate path for Microsoft 365 Apps. Current Microsoft and Certiport sources control certification objectives, fees, and delivery rules. An employer may still use its own Word test regardless of certification status.
Purchasing a PrepPack does not automatically grant MOS certification, and this guide does not treat PrepPack access as an exam voucher unless a live checkout page explicitly states otherwise.
Word Assessment vs Microsoft Office Assessment
A Word assessment focuses on one application. A Microsoft Office assessment may combine Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or other applications. If your invitation names Word only, prioritize Word. Use a broader Office guide only when your process actually combines applications.
Word Assessment vs Typing Test
Word testing measures document features and workflows. Typing tests measure speed and accuracy. An employer may use both. Do not treat typing speed as an official Word section unless your invitation says so.
Word Assessment vs Proofreading Test
Proofreading skills may appear inside a Word document task. A dedicated proofreading test focuses more heavily on language and error detection. They remain distinct search intents even when both appear in office hiring.
Word Assessment vs GMetrix Practice
GMetrix is a practice or testing platform used in Office skills preparation. JobTestPrep currently describes Word practice through the Gmetrix platform. A GMetrix practice result is not automatically an employer score, a MOS certification result, a Microsoft-issued credential, or evidence that you passed a live hiring test.
Word Assessment vs Kenexa Prove It
Kenexa Prove It and other providers may use their own simulation interfaces and scoring. Not every Word assessment uses Kenexa. This article stays provider-neutral.
Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Preparation
These categories are general preparation groups, not official universal employer levels. Not every assessment includes all three.
Basic Word skills
Possible topics include creating a document, opening and saving, Save As, selecting text, copying and pasting, undo and redo, fonts, font size, bold/italic/underline, alignment, bullets and numbering, line spacing, margins, orientation, page breaks, print preview, and page numbers.
Intermediate Word skills
Possible topics include styles, themes, section breaks, columns, headers and footers, tables, tab stops, find and replace, Format Painter, sorting lists, Track Changes, comments, document inspection, the Navigation Pane, hyperlinks, and pictures with text wrapping.
Advanced Word skills
Role-relevant advanced topics may include mail merge, references and citations, a generated table of contents (as a Word feature), captions, cross-references, bookmarks, fields, forms and content controls, compare and combine documents, restrict editing, templates, macros, and linking or embedding external data. Advanced assessments do not always include VBA or macros.
Version and Platform Differences
Word for Microsoft 365 differs from Word 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. Microsoft ended support for Word 2016 and Word 2019 on 14 October 2025. Treat Word 2016 and Word 2019 as legacy, out-of-support versions. Candidates should still practise a legacy version when an invitation explicitly names it.
Word for Windows and Word for macOS differ in shortcuts and some interface details. Word for the web does not include every desktop feature. Ribbon layouts can change. Copilot features are not universally available. Assessment simulations may differ from desktop Word. Some employer tests deliberately use a legacy build.
Common Assessment Areas
Document Creation and File Management
Expect new documents, opening, saving, Save As, file formats, PDF export, print preview, document properties, and compatibility considerations when versions differ.
Text Editing
Expect selecting, copying, moving, replacing, undoing, find, replace, changing case, and clearing formatting.
Character and Paragraph Formatting
Expect fonts, emphasis, alignment, indentation, line spacing, paragraph spacing, borders and shading, bullets, numbering, and multilevel lists.
Page Layout
Expect margins, orientation, page size, page breaks, section breaks, columns, pagination, and related layout controls. Widow and orphan control may appear in denser documents.
Styles and Themes
Expect applying and modifying styles, consistent formatting, heading hierarchy, themes, and basic style inheritance concepts.
Tables
Expect inserting tables, adding or deleting rows or columns, merging and splitting cells, alignment, sorting, repeating header rows, converting text to tables, and only clearly explained basic formulas when relevant.
Headers, Footers, and Page Numbers
Expect inserting and editing headers and footers, first-page differences, odd and even pages, section-specific headers, and restarting page numbering.
Lists and Columns
Expect bullets, numbering, multilevel lists, restarting numbering, newspaper-style columns, and column breaks.
Pictures and Graphic Elements
Expect inserting, resizing, cropping, text wrapping, position, alt text, shapes, and conceptual SmartArt awareness.
References
Expect footnotes, endnotes, citations, bibliography, captions, cross-references, bookmarks, and heading-based navigation. A generated table of contents is a Word feature used inside documents. This article does not add a separate webpage table of contents.
Review and Collaboration
Expect spelling and grammar tools, comments, Track Changes, accepting and rejecting changes, comparing documents, sharing, coauthoring, and version history where supported.
Mail Merge
Expect a main document, data source, merge fields, previewing records, filtering recipients, and completing the merge. Practice examples on this page use fictional data only.
Forms and Content Controls
At an advanced conceptual level, expect check boxes, date pickers, drop-down controls, restricting editing, and protecting form structure when forms are role-relevant.
Accessibility
Expect heading styles, alt text, meaningful link text, logical reading order, table headers, accessible color and formatting, and the Accessibility Checker.
Common Errors
Common workplace mistakes include manually formatting every heading instead of using styles, using spaces instead of tab stops, using repeated blank lines instead of spacing settings, confusing page breaks and section breaks, breaking headers across sections, accepting the wrong tracked changes, overwriting the source file, inconsistent list numbering, images without alt text, and inaccessible tables.
Security and Integrity Restrictions
Do not attempt to automate a live employment assessment, use macros or scripts to answer a proctored test, bypass proctoring, scrape proprietary assessment content, access locked answer files, obtain recalled or leaked questions, use forbidden external assistance, embed malicious macros, hide executable content, bypass document protection for illicit reasons, exfiltrate information through linked documents, exploit Word vulnerabilities, or disable organizational security controls.
Legitimate Word features may be practised in ordinary personal or training documents using fictional content only. Do not use personal employee data, customer records, medical information, legal case details, passwords, authentication tokens, or confidential company documents in practice files shared publicly.
Microsoft Word Practice Questions
Real Word assessments may require you to perform tasks inside Microsoft Word or a simulated document. The questions below use a multiple-choice format so they can be completed in a web browser. They test underlying Word concepts but do not reproduce a live assessment interface.
Unless a question states otherwise, assume desktop Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows for conceptual wording. Prefer platform-neutral concepts. When a feature is version-specific, the question states the assumption.

A) Checkbox content control (or legacy form checkbox, depending on template design)
B) Page border
C) Soft page break
D) Justified multilevel list
Correct answer: A
Checkbox controls collect boolean-style responses on forms. Exact control type depends on how the form was built.
Question 41
41. An advanced assessment task asks whether to automate a one-time title capitalization change with a macro. For a single short edit, the most efficient built-in approach is usually:
A) Write a malicious auto-open macro
B) Use Change Case or direct editing rather than writing a macro
C) Disable all document protection forever
D) Export every page as a separate PST file
Correct answer: B
Macros can automate repeated work, but a one-time capitalization fix is usually handled with Change Case or manual edit. This guide does not cover automating live employer tests.
Section 8: Applied Word Scenarios
Question 42
42. Scenario: You must build a 6-page Volunteer_Handbook.docx with consistent chapter titles, a table of contents based on those titles, and page numbers that restart after a cover page. What is the most efficient workflow?
A) Put the entire handbook in one unbroken text box
B) Type titles in bold only, insert blank lines for a TOC, and type page numbers manually on each page
C) Apply Heading styles, insert a generated table of contents, use a section break after the cover, and set page numbering for the body section
D) Convert the file to a single image per page before numbering
Correct answer: C
Heading styles power a generated TOC. Section breaks support different first-page/header and numbering schemes.
Question 43
43. Scenario: A manager email says the practical Word test runs in a simulation that may not accept every Windows shortcut. How should you prepare?
A) Memorize only one obscure shortcut and ignore ribbon commands
B) Practise automating the live assessment with scripts
C) Assume every simulation matches desktop Word for Microsoft 365 exactly
D) Learn both ribbon/menu workflows and confirm shortcut expectations from the invitation
Correct answer: D
Simulations vary. Confirm provider instructions and practise discoverable commands, not only OS-specific shortcuts.
Question 44
44. Scenario: Proposal_v3.docx was reviewed with Track Changes. You must send a clean client copy with no markup visible or pending. Best closing steps?
A) Accept or reject remaining changes as required, resolve or remove comments, then save a clean copy
B) Leave all markup on so the client sees every debate
C) Hide the Review pane only, leaving unresolved deletions active
D) Encrypt the file with a blank password and mail the tracked version
Correct answer: A
A clean deliverable requires resolving tracked edits and comments according to the approval decision, then saving the cleaned file.
Question 45
45. Scenario: Your invitation names Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows, but a coworker practised only on legacy Word 2016 (out of support as of 14 October 2025). What is the safest plan?
A) Ignore the invitation and keep using Word 2016 exclusively
B) Practise on the invited version/platform, and treat Word 2016 as legacy if you still review old notes
C) Assume ribbon names never change across versions
D) Prepare only for MOS MO-110 because it always matches employer tests
Correct answer: B
Match the invitation. Word 2016 and Word 2019 reached Microsoft end of support on 14 October 2025; use them only when the assessment explicitly requires that legacy version.

Optional Third-Party Practice
JobTestPrep Word-style practice can support familiarization with related formats as an independent commercial option. Live product pages may emphasize GMetrix-linked practice, access tiers, and version coverage. Confirm what is free versus paid at checkout. It is not Microsoft, Certiport, or an official employer assessment, and it does not grant MOS certification by itself.
Common Mistakes
- assuming every Word assessment uses the same interface;
- confusing a Word skills test with Microsoft hiring;
- preparing for MOS when the employer uses a basic practical test;
- treating JobTestPrep as the official assessment source;
- assuming every assessment contains basic, intermediate, and advanced sections;
- relying on Word 2016 instructions for Microsoft 365 without checking differences;
- practising only multiple-choice questions for an interactive test;
- practising only hands-on tasks for a knowledge test;
- using spaces instead of paragraph or tab settings;
- using repeated blank lines instead of spacing controls;
- confusing page breaks and section breaks;
- applying direct formatting instead of styles;
- breaking page numbering between sections;
- sorting only part of a table;
- accepting the wrong tracked changes;
- deleting comment text without resolving or removing the comment;
- forgetting to preview a mail merge;
- using a macro when a simpler built-in feature is appropriate;
- relying on a shortcut unsupported by the test platform;
- trying to automate or bypass the live assessment;
- treating a practice score as a hiring prediction.

Not necessarily. Many tests are created or delivered by employers, staffing firms, or assessment providers.
Is it the same as Microsoft hiring?
No. Word application skills testing is separate from Microsoft Corporation employment screening unless your invitation says otherwise.
Is it the same as an MOS Word certification exam?
No. MOS is a separate credential. Current Microsoft materials identify Microsoft Office Specialist: Word Associate for Microsoft 365 Apps with exam MO-110 on the Microsoft Learn certification page.
What skills may be tested?
File management, text editing, formatting, page layout, styles, lists, tables, headers and footers, images, references, Track Changes, and mail merge may appear. Exact content varies by employer and provider.
What is the difference between basic, intermediate, and advanced Word tests?
These are general skill categories rather than universal standards. Not every assessment includes every level.
Is the test interactive?
It may be interactive, simulated, file-based, multiple-choice, adaptive, or interviewer-led.
How many questions are on a Word assessment?
The employer or provider controls the item count. Do not assume a universal fixed number.
How long is the test?
The employer or provider controls duration.
What Word version should I practise?
Use the version named in the invitation.
Is Word 2016 still supported?
Microsoft ended support for Word 2016 (and Word 2019) on 14 October 2025. Practise Word 2016 only when the assessment explicitly uses that legacy version.
Does the linked Word practice product work on macOS?
Confirm current operating-system requirements on the product page before purchasing. Platform support can change and is not guaranteed by this guide.
Do I need Microsoft Word installed?
Some Word practice products use a document-based or simulation environment that may require a compatible Word installation. Confirm install prerequisites on the product page before purchasing. Employer Word tests remain separate from any third-party practice environment.
Does third-party Word practice include the official MOS exam?
No. Buying preparation materials does not grant MOS Word certification unless a separate exam or voucher is explicitly included at purchase. MOS remains separate from employer Word screening.
Can I use keyboard shortcuts?
The assessment interface and instructions control whether shortcuts are accepted.
What score is required?
The employer or provider controls the passing rule.
Are these official questions?
No. The practice questions on this page are original unofficial exercises.
Is the linked preparation product official Microsoft or Certiport material?
No. It is third-party preparation, not Microsoft, Certiport, or an official employer assessment.
Does a strong practice score guarantee employment?
No.
