FireTEAM is a firefighter testing system administered through National Testing Network (NTN). NTN currently describes the system as including Human Relations, Mechanical, Reading and Math tests plus a Role Fitness Questionnaire.
NTN also states that it uses tests developed by Ergometrics and Applied Personnel Research. FireTEAM should therefore not be described as unrelated to Ergometrics: NTN administers the testing network, while Ergometrics is associated with development of the FireTEAM testing system.
These are independent preparation notes. JobPracticeTests does not reproduce FireTEAM video items or secure NTN/Ergometrics questions and cannot guarantee a department score or hiring outcome.
Current FireTEAM components
According to NTN’s current FireTEAM description:
- Human Relations Test — firefighter-specific judgment and teamwork scenarios; NTN describes video-based and multiple-choice presentation depending on the current exam format;
- Mechanical Test — mechanical reasoning and aptitude;
- Reading Test — fill-in-the-blank reading ability based on firefighter-relevant written material;
- Math Test — mental calculations used in firefighter work; NTN states no calculator or paper is necessary;
- Role Fitness Questionnaire — suitability, job compatibility and work-specific personality dimensions.
NTN lists total FireTEAM test time at approximately two hours. The exact candidate experience and any department-specific cut scores still depend on the hiring agency and current invitation.

FireTEAM is not CPAT
FireTEAM is a written/video/personnel assessment system. CPAT is a physical ability test. A department may require both, one, or a different combination of tests.
Do not use this page to infer a department’s:
- application deadline;
- minimum FireTEAM score;
- CPAT requirement;
- retest policy;
- academy date;
- medical or background standards.
Those belong to the current department posting.
How to prepare
Use the component names in your current NTN account and department announcement.
For Human Relations, focus on professional communication, teamwork, safety and following authorized procedures. For Mechanical, review basic principles such as gears, pulleys, levers, pressure and simple machines. For Reading, practice precise sentence comprehension. For Math, practice accurate mental arithmetic and common rates or proportions without relying on a calculator.
The Role Fitness Questionnaire is not a knowledge quiz. Do not try to memorize a “correct personality.” Follow the instructions and answer consistently.

FAQ
Is FireTEAM an NTN test or an Ergometrics test?
NTN administers FireTEAM through its testing network and states that it uses tests developed by Ergometrics and Applied Personnel Research. Treat NTN as the candidate testing platform and current official source for the FireTEAM process.
Is FireTEAM the same as CPAT?
No. FireTEAM is an assessment system; CPAT is a physical ability test.
Does every fire department use the same cutoff?
No. Departments control their own hiring standards and should be checked individually.
