Massachusetts Civil Service Exams: Police, Fire and Corrections Guide

Massachusetts civil service testing is concentrated heavily in public-safety hiring, including municipal police, firefighter and correction officer pathways. It is not the universal hiring system for every Commonwealth job.

Do not assume a state administrative vacancy uses the same written exam as a municipal police or firefighter process.

Current 2026 schedule context

As of September 3, 2026, the Mass.gov examination schedule includes 2026 municipal firefighter, municipal police / MBTA Transit Police, Correction Officer I and other entry-level or promotional public-safety examinations.

For the October 2026 municipal police/fire and Correction Officer I cycle, the application period ended August 31, 2026. Do not treat that filing window as currently open. Candidates should use the current schedule for later cycles, updates or future announcements.

Exact dates can change, so the schedule and exam poster control.

Eligible lists and hiring

A passing exam result can lead to placement on an eligible list, but appointment is not automatic. Rank, preferences, hiring-authority needs, physical ability requirements, background review, medical or psychological screening and other title-specific steps can matter.

Do not reduce the process to “pass the written exam = get hired.”

Trial Court is separate

Massachusetts Trial Court Officer testing is a court-system process and should not be treated as another ordinary Mass.gov municipal civil service exam. Use the current Trial Court candidate material for registration, testing platform, exam guidance and later hiring steps.
