Air traffic controller aptitude testing is not standardized worldwide. The FAA, FEAST user organisations and NAV CANADA use different selection systems, even though they may measure overlapping abilities such as attention, memory, spatial processing, reasoning and multitasking.

FAA Air Traffic Skills Assessment (ATSA)

The FAA’s current Air Traffic Controller hiring page describes the ATSA as a 3.5-hour computer-based test taken in person at Pearson VUE.

The current FAA hiring model uses score categories including Failed, Qualified and Well-Qualified. The FAA states that only candidates in the Well-Qualified category are selected to continue under the present process.

The ATSA sits inside a broader FAA hiring path that also includes application screening, medical and security clearance, Academy training and later facility certification.

EUROCONTROL FEAST

FEAST is a test battery used by participating air navigation service providers and training organisations.

EUROCONTROL currently describes:

  • FEAST I: cognitive ability tests and an English-language test;
  • FEAST II: one or two more complex multitasking/work-sample tests, RADAR and possibly MULTI-PASS;
  • FEAST III: a personality questionnaire used by many FEAST organisations.

FEAST I assesses abilities including decision-making, planning, memory, logical reasoning, visual perception, attention, multitasking and spatial orientation. EUROCONTROL says no aviation background is required for the FEAST tests because the necessary task rules are explained in the instructions.

Not every FEAST user organisation uses every component.

NAV CANADA’s current selection page describes:

  1. an online timed assessment of about 30 minutes for eligible applicants;
  2. for invited candidates, in-person testing lasting about six hours;
  3. a 15-minute pre-screening interview on the same day for candidates successful at the in-person test;
  4. later assessment-centre, language and selection stages as applicable.

The current in-person stage assesses abilities including memory, working speed, spatial visualisation, thinking and reasoning, attention, information processing and simple math.

Skills that commonly matter

Across different ATC systems, candidates may encounter tasks related to:

  • sustained and selective attention;
  • working memory;
  • spatial orientation or visualisation;
  • logical reasoning;
  • numerical processing;
  • speed and accuracy;
  • information processing;
  • multitasking;
  • decision-making.

That overlap is useful for general skill practice, but it does not make third-party simulations equivalent to the official tests.

How to prepare safely

  1. Identify the exact authority and assessment named in your invitation.
  2. Read the official candidate information before practising.
  3. Use official training material first when available.
  4. Practise the underlying ability rather than trying to memorise secure test content.
  5. Work under the real timing only when the official source publishes it.
  6. Treat third-party scores as practice feedback, not official predictions.

For FEAST, EUROCONTROL provides its own free training platform and specifically warns that commercial FEAST software is not authorised by EUROCONTROL and may differ from the live tests.
